Camaguey - Read More
In the centre of Camaguey is a stunning old plaza called Plaza San Juan de Dios which is set in cobblestone streets and surrounded by brightly painted traditional buildings. The old heart of Camaguey is a labyrinth of narrow winding streets that were created this way in order to confuse pirates. Another attraction to see is the beautiful colonial church Nuestra Senora de la Merced. The church has catacombs that include a solid silver coffin. If you are keen to see the clay pot s for which Camaguey is famous then take a visit to the Museo Provincial Ignacio Agramonte. The pots can be up to 10 feet in diameter and were traditionally used to collect water for use in a drought.
In the evening we would recommend a visit to Casa de la Trova, particularly at weekends, when live music is performed on the outdoor patio.
We feature two hotels in Camaguey, the Gran Hotel on Calle Maceo in the heart of the city. This hotel is a restored 19th century building with great views of Camaguey from its 5th floor restaurant. We also feature the Colon Hotel, a simple character hotel with a stained glass portrait of Chrisopher Columbus over the doorway.
