Top Five Beaches - Cayo Santa Maria
Located on the northeast cost and declared a UNESCO reserve, this small cayo (Spanish for Island) is banded by coral reefs with 7 miles of virtually untouched beaches. Wildlife enthusiasts on their Cuban holidays will delight in discovering the colonies of flamingos, seagulls and tocororo (Cuba's national bird).
The island boasts good, comfortable accommodation ideal for couples and families. It is less suited for individuals though, unless the local wildlife is the main draw. The wide range of exotic animals found here includes ten endemic species.
